Welcome to Medical Wellness Associates

Gallagherfront.jpgWelcome to Medical Wellness Associates, one of only a few Integrative Medical facilities in the U.S.

Integrative Medicine combines conventional Western medicine with alternative or complementary treatments, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, prolotherapy, homeopathy, botanical medicine, etc.—all in an effort to treat the whole person.

As our name suggests, we are dedicated to helping you achieve optimum health---not just the absence of disease, but a state of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellness.

Medical Wellness Associates, established in 1996, was an outgrowth of our original clinic Chiropractic Nutritional Associates, which was created in 1977.  After treating thousands of patients successfully with alternative medicine, utilizing chiropractic manipulation, nutritional therapies, detoxification, botanical medicine, and homeopathy, Martin Gallagher, M.D., D.C. and his wife, Charlotte Ciotti, M.S., D.C. created the first federally recognized Integrative Medical Facility in the state of Pennsylvania.  Complementary medical services, including Medical Acupuncture, IV Nutritional Therapies, Chelation, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapies, and many others, expanded the options for patients to receive individual, cutting edge health care in one facility.

Using a team approach, patients receive the best of Western Medicine combined with alternative or complementary treatments.  Within this framework, we continue to be dedicated to our primordial intent, “To help sick people get well and educate each person to stay well.”  We continue to evaluate our patients from the wellness model of, “Natural Remedies First, Drugs Second, and Surgery Last.”

Since Medical Wellness Associates was created in 1996 over 35,000 patients per year have been treated at MWA, including those with serious health challenges such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, allergies, and chronic pain.

Some patients consult with MWA because they are hoping to avoid a scheduled surgery or reduce their reliance on prescription drugs.  Others become patients because they want to adopt a healthier lifestyle to prevent illness.

Whatever your reason for considering MWA, we are dedicated to helping you achieve your health goals.

Medical Acupuncture
Medical Acupuncture is the synthesis of Western Medical Science with Traditional Chinese Medicine practices.  Traditional Chinese medicine, which developed the practice of acupuncture, was an ancient system that recognized that disease was due to imbalances in the flow of Qi (pronounced “chee”) that moves through everyone.  Disruptions of Qi or life energy were recognized to be related to stress, poor diet, fatigue, and excessive heat or cold.  By evaluating the physical appearance of the patient, the symptoms, time of the year, color of the tongue, and quality of the pulse, traditional acupuncturists inserted hair-thin” needles into acupuncture “points”, located throughout the body, to balance the Qi and restore health.

Prolotherapy

backache.jpgProlotherapy, also known as Ligament-Tendon Reconstructive Therapy is a recognized orthopedic procedure used by highly trained physicians to reduce chronic pain.  Trauma from falls, athletic injuries, car accidents, childbirth, and occupation can weaken and injure joints and the ligaments that hold them in place.  The result is chronic, often disabling pain, loss of function, and arthritis.

While most patients undergo traditional medical evaluations (MRI, CT, etc) and conventional treatments of physical therapy, NSAIDs (Advil, Motrin, Celebrex, etc), and steroid injections, all too often they are left with chronic pain.  The persistence of chronic pain is frequently the completely overlooked cause----Ligament Injury and Instability.

What are IV Nutritional Therapies?

checking_iv_patient.jpgOur physicians may recommend IV (Intravenous) nutritional therapies as part of your health program, to facilitate your recovery.  Some patients have impaired digestion/absorption or because of their illness (heart disease, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, allergies, etc.) require both oral and intravenous nutritional therapies.  IV therapies are also useful in nutritional detoxification programs, immune stimulation or, simply, because of depletion of your body stores.  Below is a short list of the unique IV therapies that are offered at MWA.(click on a topic for more information)
